A new complex arises at Changi Airport Singapore, called project Jewel. A key highlight of the construction works for Jewel is the distinctive dome-shaped facade made of glass and steel.  For fire safety purposes Certified Partner iDAS Technology advised a SHEV system consisting of 105 aesthetical (smoke) ventilation windows.

Jewel is a new retail and lifestyle complex that will be the central hub connecting airport terminals 1,2 and 3. It has a gross floor area of about 134,000 m² that will be used for retail, airport operations, attractions and a hotel. It also features a waterfall as high as five storeys.

Eye-catcher: glass dome

It is a glass-and-steel complex designed by a  consortium of consultants that consists of Safdie  Architects, which designed the Marina Bay Sands integrated resort, Benoy, as well as local architect RSP.


Fire safety and aesthetics

Of course Jewel must have a fire safe and pleasant environment. It is essential that people present can make a fast and safe exit from the building in case of fire. An effective Smoke and Heat Exhaust system is therefore vitally important.

The design asked for a slender ventilation window and concealed controls. iDas installed 105 Lumera ventilation windows especially designed for structural glass roofs; 34 ventilation windows are triangular shaped, 71 ventlights have a rectangular shape.

Maintenance

The reliability of a SHEV system totally dependents on professional inspection and maintenance. Therefore  iDas will also take care of the maintenance of de Lumera smoke ventilation windows.
